It’s been on the cards for years now, but it slowly looks like we’re finally getting there. Martin Scorsese has been planning to make a biopic about Frank Sinatra for a long time, but recently the talks have turned into preliminary action. The director has revealed that he is in the process of meeting up with several writers, trying to get a screenplay for the project approved and he is hoping to bring the American singer and actor’s life to the screen in late 2013. The project’s working title is Sinatra, it is uncertain as to whether it’s going to hit the big or small screen and no one yet knows who will take on the lead role of the Rat Pack star or when exactly we’ll get to see it. In fact, the only thing that’s certain about Sinatra, is our excitement to have it finally moving towards production.
As far as the format is concerned, Scorsese is now seriously toying with the idea of turning Sinatra into a TV mini series, although for years this was a definite big screen-destined project. However, with all the material that the American singer offers, the filmmaker has admitted to find it difficult to tell his story in just two hours. As a consequence, he has found it even harder to approve a screenplay up until now and he is still trying to figure out where the story should begin and how much space it should occupy. For these reasons, as well as for the creative freedom that he knows he could enjoy if he decided to work with a TV network such as HBO, he is seriously considering the option of a mini series, something along the lines of Boardwalk Empire, without ruling out the possibility of him offering us yet another gangsterous cinematic experience.
In terms of who will play Frank Sinatra, there have been several estimations. Although both Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio have expressed their desire to work together once again in this project, still the director feels that in some cases it’s distracting to have a star playing someone as big as Frank and perhaps an unknown actor could work this one better. Which means that all rumours wanting Johnny Depp or George Clooney taking on the American singer’s role are brought into question as well.
Another problem that arises is who will be doing the singing. Martin Scorsese is adamant that it has to be Sinatra’s voice and that no actor could ever imitate it, and with this in mind he’s looking to attach to Sinatra an actor who is not yet a star but who is able to do a great deal of lip-syncing.
Although the project is filled with questions and everything is admittedly at a very early stage, the filmmaker seems to be highly optimistic and confirms that he has found the most special way to put all his material together and states that he is in the process of creating a great biopic to honour this legendary star. As things start happening with Sinatra, feel free to get excited.
