Much noise has already begun concerning the upcoming film Hitchcock, based on Stephen Rebello’s non-fiction book titled Alfred Hitchcock And The Making Of Psycho. First published in 1990, Rebello’s work details everything that went on while the famous director Alfred Hitchcock was making his masterpiece thriller Psycho, from his acquisition of Robert Bloch’s original novel and his work with two different screenwriters, to casting, filming and promoting his modestly budgeted movie which went on to gain international recognition, to become a classic and to influence any horror film that followed after 1960.
Rumours wanting Rebello’s book turning into a television film or a mini-series began in 2005. However, in late 2011 the plans changed and it was decided that the book would turn into a major motion picture that Sacha Gervasi (Anvil! The Story Of Anvil) would direct for The Montecito Picture Company and Fox Searchlight Pictures. In April 2012, production began in Los Angeles and Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren were cast as the two protagonists, Alfred Hitchcock and his wife, Alma Reville. The script sign Stephen Rebello and John J. McLaughlin (co-writer of Black Swan) and the film produce Ivan Reitman, Tom Pollock and Joe Medjuck alongside Alan Barnette and Tom Thayer.
Although the first few drafts of the screenplay focused more on the making of Psycho, the later and final ones that the book’s author wrote, tried to focus more on the complex relationship between Alfred Hitchcock and his wife during the time that his magnum opus thriller was being filmed. Although based on a non-fiction book, the final draft of the screenplay is rumoured to fall far away from the documentary genre, instead resembling a love story, entirely true and with a very real and fascinating background.
Scarlet Johansson, James D’Arcy, Jessica Biel, Toni Collette, Danny Huston, Michael Stuhlbarg, Michael Wincott and Wallace Langham joined the project in March 2012. Each actor takes on an exciting role, as Scarlet Johansson will portray the film’s major star Janet Leigh, James D’Arcy will play the thriller’s lead Anthony Perkins, Jessica Biel will take on the role of Vera Miles and the extremely talented Toni Collette will be Hitchcock’s closest assistant. The great Michael Stuhlbarg will play the well-known agent Lew Wasserman and Danny Huston will be the screenwriter Whitfield Cook. Wallace Langham will portray the film’s graphic designer Saul Bass and Michael Wincott will take on the role of menacing Ed-psycho killer-Gein.
Although nothing is yet said about who is going to portray Robert Bloch, Psycho‘s original novel author, his character shall no doubt be included and his relationship with the ground-breaking director shall be discussed to some extent, although of course the professional and personal life of Alfred Hitchcock and his wife is the story that will be put on first row. Hitchcock is expected to hit the screens early 2013 and will be distributed worldwide by Fox Searchlight Pictures.
