Fifty Shades of Grey is already a global phenomenon. Since the Fifty Shades trilogy release, the books have been translated into 51 languages and have sold more than 100 million copies –making it one of the most important and fastest-selling book series in history. The roles of Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele, who have become emblematic for millions of readers, have been taken on by Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson respectively, who are assisted in their performances by a secondary cast featuring Luke Grimes, Victor Rasuké, Eloise Mumford, Max Martini, Callum Keith Rennie, Jennifer Ehle, Dylan Neal, the Oscar-winning actress, Marcia Gay Harden and singer Rita Ora in her cinematographic debut as Mia. Directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson and produced by Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti alongside EL James, the creator and author of the book series, Fifty Shades of Grey was scheduled to premiere on the 1st of August, but it was pushed back a few months in order for it to spice up Valentine’s Day.
The music for the film is written by the Grammy-winning composer Danny Elfman who has become primarily known through his work on several Tim Burton film soundtracks, as well as TV Series themes such as The Simpsons and Batman. Although he has been nominated for his film compositions on numerous occasions, for both Golden Globe Awards and for Academy Awards, he’s still to win a major award, so hopefully this blockbuster will secure him another nomination and maybe even a win in 2016. However, this one is different than his previous works, as only two of his compositions Anna & Christian and Did that Hurt? are instrumental out of a total tracklist of 16 songs.
The Weeknd – Earned it
From the moment that trailers were released for the film, we couldn’t help but be impressed by the dark and sensual new version of Beyonce’s Crazy in Love which accompanies the credits. Moving on to her second addition to the soundtrack, a song titled Haunted which also appears as a new remix by Michael Diamond. Another act appearing on the tracklist twice is The Weeknd with the song Where We Belong (which also closes the soundtrack) and the already-successful Earned It which is the first official single released from the soundtrack. This song seems to have made an incredible impact on the audience as it managed to gather more than 5 million views in just one month after its premiere on YouTube. Along with the song Salted Wound by the enigmatic songwriter Sia, Earned It is the only song that is available by pre-ordering the soundtrack online.
Beyonce – Crazy in love (2014 remix)
The rest of the album is a flamboyant parade of huge names in music across the ages. We do not only refer to modern artists but to older legends as well who have been solidified in time with classics hits such as Beast of Burden by The Rolling Stones, taken from the album Some Girls in 1978, Frank Sinatra with Witchcraft from 1957 and the great Annie Lennox with her recent remake of I Put a Spell on You by Screamin’ Jay Hawkins also included in her latest album, Nostalgia.
Annie Lennox – I Put A Spell On You
The new, unreleased material included in the soundtrack is a result of blending many great performers of recent years in the pop-alternative music scene. We are exposed to female artists like Laura Welsh, Jessie Ware, Ellie Goulding and Skylar Grey, and bands like Vaults and AWOLNATION. Not too long ago, Ellie Goulding officially released her song Love Me Like you Do as an independent single, which happens to be one of the songs appearing on soundtrack as well.
